Bistek Tagalog

Vegan Filipino bistek with a red chili pepper on top.

A recipe passed down to me from my old school momma with a new era twist. I mean what else am I going to do but veganized this favorite food of mine just like Adobo I’ll make extra and have it anytime of the week. This version I used dried soy bean curd as mock meat of beef plus tofu for extra protein slowly cooked caramelized onions, garlic, calamansi or lemons, soy sauce and chili peppers for some kick.

Ingredients
-1 block of extra firm tofu
-1 package of mock beef meat (I used dried soy bean curd) hydrated in hot water
-2 tbsp. cooking oil
-3 large onions (thin slice)
-1/2 cup soy sauce
-1/4 cup water
-1/4 cup calamansi or lemons
-1 tsp mushroom powder or vegan bullion
-1 tsp salt and pepper
-few chili peppers for some kick

How to:
1.) Fry or bake tofu until crispy this will give it a nice texture once it in the sauce.
2.) Hydrate soy bean curd in hot water if using
3.) Sauté onions with two tablespoon of oil till soft and caramelize
4.) Once onions are done, add the hydrated soy bean curd and let it sauté in onions, add the crispy tofu.
5.) Add soy sauce, water and calamansi/lemons, add mushroom powder/vegan bullion, salt and pepper.
6.)At this point you can adjust the seasoning for your taste add more of soy sauce, lemon or mushroom powder and pepper.
7.) Serve over hot steamin rice and enjoy!
